Project Sunshine is a nonprofit organization that provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families.

Project Sunshine empowers a dynamic and dedicated corps of over 10,000 volunteers to bring programming – recreational (arts), educational (tutoring and mentoring) and social service (HIV and nutritional counseling) – to over 60,000 children facing medical challenges and their families in 100 major cities across the United States and in five international satellite sites: Canada, China, Israel, Kenya and Puerto Rico.

Volunteers selflessly donate their time to create program materials and deliver programs. Working onsite, our volunteers relieve the anxiety of the young patients and in a context of fun and play, foster in them the courage and coping skills necessary to confront procedures that lie ahead.

Project Sunshine volunteers spread sunshine, restoring a crucial sense of normalcy to the pediatric healthcare environment.

Abigail poses as the “Hollywood brat,” while Chelsea stars as her overwhelmed “publicist.” Here’s what Chelsea shared:

On Hollywood publicists: “Sometimes the publicists are worse than the star. They really are delusional. That’s why when I hired a publicist, I was like, I never want the type who is going to be such a pain in the ass and treats people terribly.”

On her dad, who she exploits in her latest book “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang”: “[My father] likes to have any attention, whether it’s negative or positive. He is pretty much under the correct impression that he has no say in anything I do and that my childhood was humiliating enough. So it’s payback time. If he tried to sue me, he’d have to borrow money from me to sue me.”

On working out: “[Sometimes] I’m running and get passed by a 70-year-old woman with a better body. I can’t be skinny all the time. I like to drink and I like to eat. I like burgers and bagels.”

While Abigail Breslin films have always had a pretty decent draw in movie theaters (we’re looking at you, “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Zombieland”), it seems as though that magic formula didn’t translate so well to the stage. Variety announced yesterday that “The Miracle Worker,” a Broadway play that Abigail had been headlining, will be putting an end to its run on April 4.
“The Miracle Worker” will have run for just barely one month by the time it heads off Broadway. The revival of the 1959 play about Hellen Keller and her teacher first began previewing in NYC on Feb. 12, but officially opened its doors on March 3.
Variety notes that the show got a “mixed bag of reviews — including a couple of tepid ones from prominent papers.” The show’s producers went so far as to issue a public appeal for people to come see their show. The ploy didn’t work, and “The Miracle Worker” never made much more than $250,000 a week (the high point being during school vacation weeks).
For those of you doing the math, that means in the four weeks “Miracle Worker” will have run it will have made at most $1 million. And since Broadway performances usually cost between $2 million and $3 million to produce, it means a marked lost for the show’s investors.
While Abigail’s costar Alison Pill (”Milk”) might soon becoming one of the next big thing’s thanks to her upcoming film “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” it seems as though Abigail’s star power is waning. The 13-year-old doesn’t have any big films stacked up for 2010, and her cute girl persona is being quickly overshadowed by Chloe Moretz, who is sure to turn some heads in the upcoming “Kick-Ass.”
We love ourselves some Abigail Breslin, and we’re sure she’ll have a comeback soon enough, but it does not look like 2010 is going to be her year.
Did you get a chance to see “Miracle Worker”? What did you think of it?

“With Broadway you rehearse for about two months and with film, you rehearse for about two seconds and then you’re on. You don’t get as much, you film such short amounts of footage at a time, that’s why films take so long to make.

Abigail Breslin recently chatted with Playbill.com about how she prepares each day to star as Helen Keller in Broadway’s The Miracle Worker!
In the Morning:
When I wake up in the morning I eat cereal on the couch and cuddle with my dog for a bit before heading off to the gym for a quick run. I like to get to the gym before going to the theatre to get my energy up. After the gym, I head home for a quick shower and then I’m off to the theatre!
Afternoon:
They would like us get to the theatre on time for rehearsals, so I try to arrive early so I can always be on time. Heading towards the theatre, it’s hard to believe I’m really on Broadway! This is the ultimate New York experience. I am both really nervous and tremendously excited. I really want the audience to enjoy the show and to honor the memory of Helen Keller. Helen is such an inspiration to me. She is an American heroine and I am more than honored to have the opportunity to play her. It has been hard playing a character with no text and to be purely physical, but she had such a huge personality, so I have a lot to draw from. The cast has also been so supportive. Matthew [Modine] has been amazing. He’s collaborative and funny. It is very hard to feel any stress around him because he is such a positive person.
Our rehearsals last from 1 PM to 5:30 PM and then we have a dinner break until 7 PM. I’m having so much fun trying different restaurants in the theatre district! Right now my favorites are Tony’s and The Palm.
Showtime:
To prepare for the show I do my own makeup for each performance. I have someone help me with my hair as I am wearing a wig in the show. After my makeup and hair is done, the dresser comes and helps me get dressed. I have about three outfit changes during the performance. I have had so much fun during rehearsals and my first preview that I cannot wait for opening night! I’m excited, nervous, overwhelmed, and humbled all at once!
Sounds exciting!

Managing to be both demonic and touching, Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) gives a tremendous performance as Helen Keller in the first Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker.”
And while Alison Pill looks and behaves convincingly as her stubborn teacher Annie, she lacks the pungent Irishness and variety that Anne Bancroft brought to William Gibson’s 1959 play and subsequent movie.
“The Miracle Worker” tells the indeed miraculous story of how Sullivan, a 20-year-old Irish girl from Boston, taught language to a 10-year-old Alabama girl. Helen had been bright and healthy until an infant disease, probably scarlet fever, rendered her blind and deaf at 19 months.

It was an extraordinary achievement for the obdurate teacher, who had herself been temporarily blind and who got scant help from Helen’s overindulgent family. Administering tough love, she drilled letters and words into the girl’s palms.

Eventually Sullivan earned the support of Captain Keller, a Confederate Army veteran, and Kate, his Southern belle wife. Enduring the child’s tantrums, Sullivan got permission to move with Helen from the main house to a small garden studio, where the tutor had sole control of her student.

Uphill Struggle

It was an uphill struggle for Sullivan, who often wore dark glasses to protect her own light-discomfited eyes and who, not allowed sterner measures, nevertheless had to exercise remarkable strength, agility and creativity. The play ends with Helen’s first comprehension of and tentative display of words, but we know that Keller went on to become a world-famous writer, lecturer and enlightened feminist.

Regrettably, Circle in the Square Theatre, where the audience surrounds the sunken stage on all sides, proves an inhospitable venue. We never get a clear sense of simultaneous goings-on in two houses and the space between. Worse, the actors are either too far away or too close, sometimes even blocked from view by one another.

Yet in this play actions must generally speak louder than words. In addition to the stars, Matthew Modine and Tobias Segal convince as Captain Keller and his hapless grown son James. Jennifer Morrison is somewhat less interesting as Kate, while Elizabeth Franz and Daniel Oreskes satisfy in lesser roles.

Set designer Derek McLane tries valiantly to overcome the limitations of the space, but the result is furniture that must descend on visible cables and an all-important garden pump that keeps popping up and disappearing below stage. Paul Tazewell’s costumes and Kenneth Posner’s lighting are fine.

Director Kate Whoriskey was also unable to solve the theater’s problems. The final scene, which ought to move the very stones to tears, only barely reaches our hearts.

At 235 W. 50th St. Information: +1-212-239-6200;
